In the Republic of Cyprus the requirements for a motor vehicle to be driven are:
- A valid Driving License recognized by the Cyprus Authorities.
- A valid Insurance Policy
- A valid MOT certificate
- Paid up to date Road Tax
All vehicles over four years old are subject to a Department of Road Transport test for mechanical safety as well as emissions levels. This test must be passed every two years. This is commonly known as the MOT certificate. The test takes approximately 30 minutes to be completed and includes the following checks:
- Suspension
- Brakes
- CO2 emissions
- Steering
- Basic external checks, such as lights, tyres, etc.
It costs about €35 and the results are electronically submitted to the Department of Transport. Failure to have a valid MOT test has serious consequences as Road Tax becomes invalid and Insurance Company may refuse to cover any damages in case of an accident. See the list of MOT stations:http://bit.ly/3NjhRQs An annual road tax is payable for vehicles in Cyprus. This is calculated based on engine capacity and charged per calendar year. You can easily renew your road tax at https://www.jccsmart.com/or at the Road & Transport Department offices or at Citizen Service centers or at Commercial Banks. The Road Tax is renewable in the first month of each year with the option of six months or yearly. After the deadline of the renewal period a penalty of €30 + 10% of the rate of tax for the vehicle will be incurred.
